The capital of Ireland’s sunny south east, Wexford is an attractive town with a rich and interesting history. Originally founded by the Vikings about 800 AD, it became a stronghold for Viking and Norman invaders over the next 300 years and enjoyed a lot of independence from the rest of Ireland.
However, it came under attack, first from Irish clans and later from British invaders until it was eventually sacked by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. Wexford is now a modern and attractive town that offers plenty to see and do for the visitor. It has a rich culture and hosts the internationally famous Wexford Opera Festival.
