Waterford - An Introduction

Situated in the south east of Ireland, Waterford City is the capital of County Waterford. Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland and was founded in 914 AD by the Vikings and today Waterford is the fifth largest city in Ireland.

Waterford is ideally located in the ‘Sunny South East’ to take advantage of the various outdoor attractions available in Waterford. There is no shortage of top quality golf courses and for those interested in walking, angling, equestrian and cycling; Waterford has a lot to offer.

For the history of Waterford it is necessary to look back to the year 853 when Viking raider established a settlement at Waterford. The Vikings were driven out of Ireland, but returned in 902 and re-established themselves in the area now knows as Waterford. During the Medieval period, Waterford was the second city in Ireland after Dublin. The prosperity continued until the 18th and 19th Centuries. Today much of the fantastic architecture in Waterford traces back to this period.

Today Waterford is an important centre of education and industry with important railway links to Dublin. The population of the greater area of Waterford is roughly 120,000 people.
