Statues in Dublin

Being a historic city, it is no surprise that Dublin has had its fair share of heroes and shining lights. Among the most famous statues are:

Daniel O’Connell
Daniel O’Connell was born in Co. Kerry in 1775. O’Connell is famous for using peaceful means to try and secure emancipation for British rule in Ireland. He organised nationwide ‘aggregate meetings’ of Irish Catholics so that they could petition for their legal rights. The statue of Daniel O’Connell stands on O’Connell Street.

Phil Lynott
The statue of Phil Lynott is the newest permanent statue in Dublin City. The statue is located on Grafton Street and pays tribute to the musical genius of Phil Lynott. Lynott was dogged by drub and alcohol addictions, and died on December 25 1985 after a heroin overdose.

Molly Malone
The Molly Malone statue stands at the foot of Grafton Street. As the song says, Molly Malone used to ‘wheel her wheel barrow through the streets broad and narrow, crying cockles and mussels, alive a live o!’ Molly Malone was a beautiful fish monger who plied her trade in Dublin, but tragically died of a fever at a young age.

Patrick Kavanagh
Patrick Kavanagh was a famous Irish poet who grew up in Monaghan working the farmland which he saw as ‘stony grey soil.’ Kavanagh moved to Dublin where he began to write about life in Dublin. He is commemorated on the banks of the Grand Canal, sitting on a bench as he so often did before his death in 1960.
