Shopping in Ireland
When you visit Ireland for any length of time, there seems to be an unwritten rule that you just have to take something back with you. Maybe your aunt wanted a piece of Waterford Crystal, or your cousin asked for some Irish linen for her table; maybe your uncle is researching the family genealogy and told you to pick up some hard-to-find books, or you just couldn’t leave that little trinket behind in the antique shop because you knew you’d never find another one like it. Whatever the reason, Ireland seems to demand shopping of its guests, and the guests are only too happy to oblige!
If you plan to wander from shop to shop but actually purchase very little, then you may not need to make many plans in the way of transport. If, however, you are a serious shopper bent on a serious shopping spree, you will want to make arrangements accordingly. Don’t use public transport if you plan on purchasing anything bulky or exceptionally fragile; hire a rental car and use it to transport your finds with the care they deserve, and you’ll have a much better chance of getting them home intact.
If you are a serious shopper then you likely already know some of the cardinal rules, such as wearing sensible shoes and dressing for the weather. You should also bear in mind that shopping in Ireland is not the same as shopping in North America, since there are fewer shopping malls and a greater profusion of specialty and boutique shops. These make the chase that much more thrilling, but they also demand a degree of planning that might not be required closer to your home. Take a city map with you when you go, and if you are driving your rented car, be sure to also mark out places to park when you get there!
