Bridges Over the River Liffey

Information about some of the most famous bridges over the River Liffey in the Dublin City Center:

O’Connell Bridge
O’Connell Bridge is the main bridge crossing over the River Liffey. The Bridge was designed by James Gandon between 1791 and 1794. In 1882 the bridge was widened to its current state and now forms part of O’Connell Street. The bridge is unique in Europe because it is wider than it is long.

Ha’penny Bridge
Probably the most famous bridge in Ireland, the Ha’penny Bridge was the first pedestrian bridge built to cross the Liffey. It is so called because of the toll of a half penny to cross the bridge. The bridge joins Temple Bar with the Abbey Street area of Dublin.

Millennium Bridge
The Millennium is the first of three pedestrian bridges that cross the Liffey as it travels eastwards towards the Irish Sea. The bridge was opened in 1999 to mark the occasion of the millennium. The bridge joins the Parliament Street area of Temple Bar with the Jervis Street area on the North side of Dublin. The bridge is a portal frame structure made up of a slender steel truss and resting on reinforced concrete.

Sean O’Casey Bridge
The Sean O’Casey Bridge is a pedestrian bridge which crosses the River Liffey and joins the IFSC with Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. The bridge was constructed in 2005 as part of the Dublin Docklands Development and a urban renewal scheme. The Bridge swings to allow river traffic pass, and is roughly 100 meters long.
